DIY Pom Pom Backpack
Are you at all surprised I would cover a backpack in pom-poms? I love this project involving one of my favorite craft supplies, but I can’t take credit for the idea. It was all Stella’s! I had asked her what type of crafts I should make for back-to-school and she said. “You should make a pom-pom backpack!” Pure genius.
Here’s Stella modeling the finished product. Although, I’m keeping this backpack for myself.

Supplies for DIY Backpack
- Inexpensive backpack
- Colorful pom-poms in a variety of sizes
- Hot glue or fabric glue
How to Decorate a Backpack with Pom-Poms
Step 1: Glue on pom-poms
I used the pom-poms to cover the two big pockets on the front of my backpack. Go for a cohesive color palette like neon, but choose a variety of sized pom-poms. I worked on covering one pocket at a time by scattering the pom-poms on the front in a random fashion to get the general look I was going for.
Step 2: Fill in any gaps
Then I picked up each pom-pom, added a dab of hot glue to the back of it, and stuck it in place on the pack. I worked my way around the pocket until I had glued down all the pom-poms and then used extra pom-poms to fill in any gaps.
Note: I had initially planned to use fabric glue, but found that the hot glue gun did a better job of securing the pom-poms in place quickly so they didn’t shift around.
You could go nuts and cover the entire backpack if you want, but I like the look of having just the two pockets covered.
What do you think? Do you have an old backpack that could use a makeover?!
